Interview with Shilpa Mahtani

Spokesperson, Shilpa Mahtani, Co founder and Managing Director of bnbme holiday homes by Hoteliers

  1. What inspired you to start your business?

The inspiration for bnbme – Holiday Homes by Hoteliers stemmed from a personal experience. In 2016, after dealing with a long-term tenant who left my apartment in poor condition, I decided to explore the short-term rental market. What started as a passion project soon became a profitable venture, doubling the income I would have earned through a traditional lease. Beyond financial returns, my vision was to bring luxury hotel-style services into the comfort of a home, offering guests an elevated experience while maximizing property value for homeowners.

  1. What were some major challenges while setting up your business?

When I first started, Dubai was still adapting to the concept of short-term rentals, with no clear laws or regulations governing the industry. The lack of structure led to opposition from building managements and major developers, creating roadblocks in scaling the business. However, Dubai Tourism’s agility in formalizing regulations helped pave the way for structured growth. Over time, we transitioned from overcoming challenges to becoming an advisory partner in shaping regulations for the betterment of the holiday home industry in Dubai.

  1. What key trends can we expect in holiday homes in 2025?

The short-term rental industry is evolving rapidly, and 2025 will see the rise of key trends, including:

Sustainable Homes – Sustainability is no longer optional; it’s a necessity. A trend gaining momentum globally is now influencing holiday homes in Dubai. At bnbme, we are actively integrating eco-friendly cleaning products, eliminating plastic, and going paperless to reduce our carbon footprint.

Luxury Tech Integration – Technology has always been at the heart of our operations, but now AI-driven automation is enhancing every aspect of the guest experience, from seamless communication to optimizing operational efficiency.

Work & Experience Travel – The shift toward remote work and experience-based travel is fueling the demand for longer stays in unique locations. More travelers now seek accommodations that cater to both work and leisure, making holiday homes the ideal choice over hotels.

  1. As a woman entrepreneur, how do you manage and balance work and home?

I don’t believe in the concept of work-life balance—it’s unrealistic and sets impossible standards. Instead, I strive for work-life harmony, where I integrate the important aspects of my life—business, family, and personal well-being—in a way that works best for me. There will always be trade-offs, but the key is prioritizing what truly matters in each moment rather than chasing an elusive “perfect balance.”

  1. What are your plans for 2025—both personally and professionally?

Personally – My goal is to travel more and explore new destinations. This year has already started on a great note with a visit to the vibrant city of Lahore, and I hope to continue this journey of discovery.

Professionally – We are actively exploring acquisition opportunities, and I’m excited about potentially finalizing a major acquisition in the coming days. Growth and expansion remain a priority for bnbme in 2025.

  1. One tip for aspiring women entrepreneurs?

Follow your passion. Passion is the driving force behind every successful venture. It fuels resilience, creativity, and perseverance, guiding one toward their goals. As Nelson Mandela said, “There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”
